The Utilization of Amino Acids and Related Compounds by Clostridium tetani.

چکیده

Studies on the metabolism of Clostridium tetani have been confined to the general changes during growth in various media. Woods and Clifton, 1937, and Barker, 1937, reported that Clostridium tetanomorphum, an anaerobe apparently closely related to C. tetani, obtains its energy by the fermentation of certain amino acids, while Clostridium sporogenes (Stickland, 1934-35) and C. botulinum (Clifton, 1940) utilize amino acids primarily by means of the "Stickland reaction", a coupled oxidation-reduction between pairs of different amino acids. These studies on the utilization of amino acids and of possible intermediate products by the pathogenic anaerobes (and closely related forms) have been extended to include the metabolic activities of C. tetani. The methods employed were essentially those previously described (Clifton, 1940). The strain of C. tetani (E-35), obtained from Dr. Ivan Hall's collection (No. 130A), is an active toxin producer.

Comparative Study of Three Vaccinal Strains of Clostridium tetani Including Harvard 52, G5 and 49205 from Standpoint of Six Essential Factors to Evaluate Their Toxigenesis for Use in Tetanus Vaccine Production

Tetanus is an important disease which created by tetanospasmin toxin of Clostridium tetani. In this study we surveyed six important factors including LF, KF, MLD, pH, OD and total protein assay of Harvard 52 (H52), G5 (HG5) and 49205 (H49205) strains of the bacterium to determine which of them were more suitable for use in vaccine production. The mentioned strains were seperatedly reactivated i...

Studies of the Nutritional Requirements of Clostridium tetani

The growth requirements of the New York State Laboratories strain of Clostridium tetani were the subject of investigation by Mueller and his co-workers (Mueller and Miller, 1941a, 1942; Feeney et al., 1943a, b). During these studies, a synthetic medium capable of supporting good growth of this strain of C. tetani in primary culture was developed. However, these investigators were interested pri...

Effects of long-term frozen storage on the compositions of free amino acids and nucleotide-related compounds of the coconut crab Birgus latro

This study examined the effects of long-term frozen storage (-20 °C for 5 months) of free amino acids (FAAs) and nucleotide-related compounds (NRCs) in muscle and hepatopancreas of the coconut crab Birgus latro. Although long-term frozen storage had little effect on FAA composition in muscle, the amounts of several FAAs increased in the hepatopancreas that may be the result of protein decomposi...

Clostridium perfringens, their Properties and their Detection

Clostridia are relatively large, Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria that can undergo only anaerobic metabolism. Most Clostridia cannot grow under aerobic conditions and can even be killed by exposure to O2; however, they form endospores that are able to survive long periods of exposure to air and other adverse environmental conditions. The natural sources of clostridia are anaerobic habitats wi...
